Look Who Came to Visit!!

It's been at least a month, but there on the other side of the fence was Baby!!  As I called her name, she jumped the fence and came closer.

She's bigger, but not as big as her mom, and all of her pretty fawn spots are gone.  In typical "Baby fashion"  she came really close, kicked off and ran down to the bottom of the pasture by the stream.

When I called her name, the closer she came.

I was worried she came back because something had happened to her mom, but I saw mom on the other side of the fence watching her baby.  Mom stays with her baby for two years!

Baby was here again today, I threw some apples to her.  Maybe she's been here all along and I just didn't notice.

Definitely Feels Like Fall

                                 A gourd from Mindy's garden
The hummers are still here, which is later than usual, and they are fat!  This will probably be the last week to have them, so wanted to capture them before they head to Mexico!

Pumpkins are still on the vine

Gourds are still on the vine
Castor Bean Plant ended up in my compost pile from who knows where

                                     A lot of gold

                       A lot of purple

                             Toad Lily in bloom
Time to plant the volunteer Helebores

Lord Roman's Holly Bush

With Sally here today, lots of rain and wind, it was a good day to catch up on thank you notes and posts. So far we still have power.  When we moved here six years ago, removing this enormous holly was a big consideration, but after asking friends what they would do, it was unanimous that we keep it since it was old.
It produces no berries, no flowers, is a place for the snakes to hang out, covers a major portion of the brick courtyard and hides a window into the living room.  It also keeps growing, so we are constantly cutting it back.

AND!  Lord Roman will not come out from under it!  He LOVES this bush. We are now calling him the bush beast.  He will stay under the bush from sun up to sundown and won't come out unless you have a treat which has made him gain too much weight for his arthritic legs.
Look how he just lays there looking at me as I try to coax him out from under the bush. He drives me crazy!
You can see how much of the courtyard is covered by the bush. It would really open it up and you would see a lot more of the house, and the other side of the chimney would be exposed.
I would plant some boxwoods under the window and on the corner plant a conifer maybe in a blue tone.
Of course, the bush stays until Roman is gone, I couldn't take his bush away from him, but he is 14 1/2 years old and my oldest chow made it to 18, so the bush may be with us for a while.
It will also free up the path along the front of the house.

I haven't gotten to my potting shed, but I had an excuse! I went in to assess what I needed to do and something was hanging in the window.  I thought it might be a caught mouse.

It wasn't a mouse, it was a cute tiny bat                               napping. He/she was there for a few days                           and didn't come back one day.  Maybe just                          a  layover?

I did, however, get all my ferns planted in my new fern bed once the new HVAC unit was put in.  They needed to get through that little door to get into the crawl space, and I knew they would stomp on my ferns if I put them in beforehand.

Mindy and Shahab came for a yard tour last weekend to see what seedlings they could dig up for a new garden they are starting, and I was so happy that Shahab noticed my fern bed and liked it.  I'm really starting to like ferns!
The plants are showing signs of fall, the coleus is at it's best and will start to wain once the temps drop.

Berries are starting to appear on the bushes.

I love this blue "weed" growing along the driveway.
Porcelain berry vine is looking really good this year growing on the entrance gate down by the farmhouse.
I think the last two weeks were my busiest this summer in rescue.  I was on the road all last week, one day for 7 hours meeting volunteers springing dogs from shelters.  This little senior was in Anderson, SC, his name is Chauncey.  He was really depressed being dumped by his owners, but a friend in rescue took him to her sanctuary farm.
This chow named Monkey now changed to Monte was in Chapel Hill, NC.  I picked him up and drove him to the GA line to go to Chap's Chow Rescue in Atlanta where four of my chows were adopted from.  He was in quarantine for a bite case and very unhappy.

Monte is pretty happy now being out of the shelter and into a foster home in Atlanta.
This is Chauncey from SC, he had to be shaved due to mats, got a bath and he is also pretty happy to be out and on a farm.  Sadly, Debi contacted me yesterday, he had a stroke and was at the vet and we are awaiting word on his status.  I hope he gets to have some time to enjoy the farm.
And then there is this senior who was in a shelter on the coast.  He is deaf and blind.  I met the shelter volunteer in Greenville, SC and brought him home for two days until Bob drove him to Trish four hours away who is fostering him.  He also had to be shaved he was so matted.
This is his shelter photo and you can see how bad his fur looks.
Bob taking a nap with Keller.  He didn't have a name at the shelter, but Trish thought it fitting to name him that.
                                   Out in the yard relaxing.

So just waiting for Sally to pass to get back to work outside and on the shed in anticipation of the BIG church sale on Saturday.  It is usually in May, I knew it would be canceled, then it was to be last month and canceled again, but now it is a GO for Saturday and I will be one of the first ones in line!  Something to look forward to!
